Paper Wasps

The Following is in response to “Paper Wasps” by Hall Jameson via Oblong.

"She chose to leave it there, because paper wasps kept them themselves unless threatened. She wondered how they would react to the smoke and fire." ~Excerpt from "Paper Wasps" by Hall Jameson

Jameson’s piece of flash fiction transports the reader within a wasp nest and invites them to feel what it’s like to be one of the buzzing insects. Our character, Hannah, is actually dreaming about the wasps safely in a school auditorium where she and many others have fled their homes due to a fire.

I love the line: “Surely, they would not abandon their home as she had done, they would stay behind and fight.” The comparison between the paper wasps and humans forces us to ask ourselves how important are our homes—or even just the things that we cherish in general—are to us. Do we flee when the going gets tough, or do we stand up and fight mother nature for what we call ours?
